meet the beeple: holton carner

Holton Carner · Oct 8, 2024

The team here at beeps has come a long way in reimagining on-call. Our goal of creating a modern on-call platform wouldn’t be possible without the amazing engineers that are working behind the scenes to perfect our product.  While our mission is underway, we wanted to take some time to highlight the individuals that are building beeps from the ground up.

Introducing Holton:

What’s up everyone! My name is Holton Carner, and I’m a marketing intern here at beeps! I’m a born and raised Austinite, so it’s a given that I like keeping things a bit weird. I currently attend the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ‘em)! I’m a very competitive person and love playing all types of sports–I can even dunk a basketball!

What are you studying in school and how did you choose your major?

I’m majoring in advertising and pursuing a minor in business and public policy! I’ve always had a knack for being creative, and really enjoy analyzing consumer decision-making. I’ve been heavily involved with on-campus student organizations centered around marketing; and have grown to love the strategic side of it all. Marketing, and my concentration of advertising, are the perfect intersection between these interests of mine. It’s given me the platform to utilize my creative personality alongside my analytical skills to create meaningful campaigns that speak to people.

Why beeps?

Ever since I began my studies, I’ve always been intrigued by working in the technology marketing space. I was looking for marketing internship opportunities over the summer to expand my skill set and obtain some professional experience. After months of applying and being rejected for internships in this competitive space, I felt a bit discouraged. This was all until Joey reached out to me on LinkedIn about an opportunity to work as a marketing intern for an early-stage startup. After meeting with Joey and hearing about his plan for beeps, I was all in. Joey’s vision for creating an easier on-call experience for software engineers really resonated with me. The team members here at beeps are brilliant individuals who work well together as a team. It didn’t take long for me to realize that beeps had a culture that I wanted to be a part of. I wanted to play a role in this industry shift and promote a cause that has the potential to help people working behind the screens.

What's a brand / marketing campaign or initiative that you've admired?

A marketing campaign that has always stood out to me is Apple’s ‘1984’ campaign. This campaign introduced the world to the Macintosh computer. This TV spot was unlike any other; it was weird, out-of-the-box, and didn’t demonstrate any features of the product. Apple utilized cinematic storytelling to portray the idea that this product would send shockwaves through both the technology industry, and the world. This advertisement changed advertising and marketing for the better by ridding the industry of its unimaginative and boring practices. This campaign was truly inspiring, and I loved doing a deep dive into it during my studies! This method of advertising really rubbed off on me! I try to implement my own weird style of content creation in all the work I do.

What's your all-time favorite meme?

My all-time favorite meme is definitely the ‘Drake helping Lil Yachty with a laptop’ meme. I’ve seen so many hilarious uses of this meme on Twitter, TikTok, and reddit (it’s ingrained in my brain).

If you weren't in marketing, what career path would you pursue?

If I wasn’t pursuing a career in marketing, I could definitely see myself as a journalist covering sports. I’ve always loved to express myself through writing and sports is a topic that I’m heavily invested in. I follow collegiate athletics, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association very closely. Sports played a huge role in my upbringing and taught me a plethora of invaluable life lessons. The culture and atmosphere of the sports world is unlike any other; being immersed in it as a writer must be one of the most exhilarating experiences one can have. That being said, if anyone ever wants to discuss a sports topic (or debate about the best player in the NBA), feel free to reach out!
